Police chase teen awaits sentencing
A DORKING teen who sped away from police trying to question him led officers on a terrifying 10-mile chase.
The dramatic events on the night of April 29 unfolded at Redhill Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Samuel Robert Budd, 18, of Chalkpit Lane, Dorking, admitted charges of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving not in accordance with his licence, failing to stop when asked to by police and driving with no insurance.
Hana Moore, prosecuting, said that in the early hours of Saturday April 29, police offices observed a Fiat Punto in Epsom Road, Leatherhead, and signalled for the Punto to stop but the youth sped off, leaving police to give chase.
The officers followed the Punto along the Leatherhead to Cobham road.
"No attempt was made by the driver to pull over despite the lights and sirens the police were using," said Mrs Moore.
Mrs Moore added that a stinger device was thrown across the road to spike the Punto's tyres but the car carried on with smoke and sparks in its wake.
The driver even tried to ram the police car.
The defendant accelerated towards Byfleet, eventually turning down a dead-end lane near Seven Hills Road where he was confronted with iron gates.
"The tyres were deflated and the wheel trims dragged along the road. The driver decamped but was then apprehended," said Mrs Moore.
Magistrates heard the defendant was of previous good character.
Lionel Blackman, defending, said his client's actions occurred after a moment of panic.
"In a split second he made the most stupid decision of his life," he said.
The case was sent to the Crown Court for sentence. Committal proceedings will take place on June 11. Unconditional bail was allowed and an interim driving ban imposed.
