A QUICK-THINKING police officer has helped save a baby girl who was choking.

The father of eight-month-old Amelia ran out of his house in the Greenacres area of Oxted shouting for help after she swallowed a plastic tag and stopped breathing.

PC Tristan Barnett, was on patrol in the area when he saw the distressed dad, two weeks ago.

He was aware that he couldn't use the usual Heimlich Maneuver used on adults, as it could damage the baby's ribs. But with his first aid training, he was able to administer several slaps to her back, causing her to cough and dislodge the plastic.

"I have never been so relieved to hear a child cry before," he said. "I am just grateful I was able to assist and help revive Amelia, who has made a full recovery following the incident and I wish her all the best for the future."

Tandridge Neighbourhood Inspector Angie Austin, said: "I am extremely proud of PC Barnett and although Tristan is being modest, it doesn't get better than saving the life of a baby and he should be recognised for his work."
