A football fan is cycling to every Premiership stadium this summer to raise money for bowel cancer research.

David Holiday, 31, of Highbury Drive, Leatherhead, is hoping to visit each of the 20 football grounds in eight days with friend Gareth Hopkins while raising £10,000 for the Bobby Moore Fund.

The Everton fan said: "We decided to do this because we wanted to do something that would really challenge us. We thought about cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats but we felt that has been done to death. We tried to think of something original and exciting and I came up with the idea of cycling to each of the current 20 Premier League club's grounds.

"We then decided to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund because my mother-in-law has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is going under treatment."

The two men will board a train with their bikes and start their cycling adventure at Sunderland's ground, the Stadium of Light, on June 12.

They will then work their way down the country taking in historic stadiums, such as Old Trafford, Anfield and Upton Park, before finishing at Portsmouth's Fratton Park.

The football fanatics will be cycling for up to ten hours a day to get to all the grounds by Saturday, June 19, and they are also hoping to catch a few World Cup games along the way.

"I live in Leatherhead but work in Staines so I have been cycling to work and I have also been training with my bike as much as possible," he said.

"I am a bit of a novice cyclist but I have done three marathons so I know how much pain this is going to cause and how to prepare myself. It's going to be a big challenge.

"Between us we have been to most of the football grounds before but I am most looking forward to seeing Fratton Park because that is our final ground and the end of the trip.

"We will be contacting the football clubs and see what happens. We are hoping they might be able to give us a tour or something."

Mr Holiday added: "We already have our route mapped out but we want to try and get some GPS equipment for our bikes so we won't get lost and go to the grounds the quickest way."
