The summer is always a busy time for Guildford as many events are held to celebrate the fact that the sun is out and the temperatures are blistering (allegedly). Yesterday marked the start of the Guildford Summer Festival, which is set to last all month. Here's a selection of highlights for you to look forward to.

Guildford Town Centre Cycle Races (4th July)

  1. Guilfest is one of many major Guildford events happening in July.

Guilfest is one of many major Guildford events happening in July.

The Guildford Town Centre Cycle Races, taking place on the High Street and North Street, return for 2012 albeit under a new format. The youth categories will battle first followed by third cats, the women and then E12. This is the first time the women's race has taken place in the Guildford event and results count towards the London Women's Cycle Race League.

Starts at 6:30pm.

Guildford Beer Festival at Guildford Cricket Club (6th-7th July)

This is an event that hasn't been going for a long time but has already proved to be a hit with the locals in its short history. The atmosphere last year was very relaxed and friendly with live music providing a lovely accompaniment. More importantly though, there should be a fine array of locally-produced beer that each have their own distinct flavour.

Tickets available from the Guildford Tourist Information Office.

Guildford Cricket Festival at Guildford Cricket Club (11th-15th July)

Surrey Cricket Club play their only LV County Championship match in Guildford (against Lancashire) followed by their only limited-overs match of the season in Guildford (against Nottinghamshire Outlaws). These events are always very popular so do get a ticket as soon as you can!

Tickets available from the Guildford Tourist Information Office.

Guilfest at Stoke Park (13th-15th July)

We've already provided plenty of updates on Guildford People about the line-up but, in case you needed reminding, this year's event is headlined by Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, Olly Murs and Bryan Ferry. Other acts appearing throughout the weekend include Tim Minchin, Gary Numan, Ash, Jimmy Cliff, Chic feat. Nile Rodgers and Rolo Tomassi.

Tickets available from Guilfest's website.

Olympic Torch Relay in Guildford (20th July)

Just a week before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch will make its way through Surrey including Shere and Guildford. The convoy will arrive at Shere at around 4:55pm and then at around 6:15pm will starts its route across Guildford. Guildford People will have more information on the Olympic Torch route nearer the time.

Celebrating the Torch at Stoke Park (20th July)

Whilst the Olympic Torch makes its way to Guildford, a free event, which 'sold out' a long time ago, is taking place at Stoke Park from 2pm to 10pm for all local residents. There will be a mixture of local food and drink, live music and entertainment (including a set by Rizzle Kicks) and the cauldron lighting from the Olympic Torch. It promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event and Guildford People will be there. More details to come in the following weeks.

Electric Theatre Summer Film Festival (23rd-26th July)

The Electric Theatre will once again show a range of critically acclaimed films over the period of four days. This year's films are led by Werner Herzog's critically-acclaimed Into The Abyss.

Tickets available by calling 01483 444789.
