Red & Whites set for new campaign
A COMMITTED Dorking squad overcame Westcombe Park from National League Two in an entertaining encounter at the Big Field on Saturday.
The friendly fixture saw both sides regularly rotating players to give all game time before the league season kicks off this weekend.
The men from Kent looked sharp in the opening encounters with their big back row linking well with their dangerous looking half back pairing. However, some excellent first up tackling from the Red & Whites, leaving several of their regular starting XV on the bench, kept the score to nil.
With just over 10 minutes gone it was the home side who put the first points on the board as 18-year-old Rob Stephen slotted over a penalty after the Park hooker strayed offside at a ruck.
Dorking upped the tempo and with Geldenhuys prominent, holes began to appear in the away side's defence, with both Hampson and Fee going close. However, Park upped the tempo and as the clock neared the half hour mark, scored two converted tries in quick succession for a 14-3 lead.
The Big Field men were immediately under the cosh again and only a dropped pass by the Park left wing with the line at his mercy prevented further damage. As the half came to a close, a number of replacements came on to help relieve the siege and a large home support had something to hold on to at the break as Noble seized upon some confusion in the Park midfield before gliding in for an excellent score.
Dorking hit their straps immediately on the referee's whistling for the second half to begin. A textbook gather from Ted Watts was driven on by his fellow forwards and although the attack was halted a few metres short of the try line, an excellent pick and go and deft ball handling skills from second row Ben Puttick saw him score an excellent try.
Two further tries from former Old Reigatians centre Alrich Muller, and blindside flanker Rob Fee, put the score up to 27-14 with the home side now totally dominant.
The home crowd bayed for more tries, though credit due to Park as they stayed focused and were rewarded with a textbook run-in under the posts after a missed tackle in midfield provided their stocky replacement centre with an early Christmas present.
However, all hopes of a Park comeback were extinguished as Dorking began to impose themselves at the breakdown. With Noble having an ever increasing influence on the game, the next score went to Puttick, who took a neat little slip pass from Ben Lucas to crash over for second and Dorking's fifth try with eight minutes left to play.
Dorking could have scored on a number of occasions thereafter as their back line tormented Park's fading defence and with two minutes left, Noble showed considerable acceleration, shimmied and side-stepped his way under the posts to bring Dorking's second half tally to 29 points.
