Red & Whites get back on track with Havant victory
DORKING travelled to an in-form Havant knowing that if the standard of performance from the previous Saturday at Staines was repeated then they would be in for a tough afternoon.
However, they put that display firmly behind them with a comprehensive victory over the struggling south coast side.
With a few injuries still being carried it was the turn for another homegrown talent in the shape of 20-year-old Fraser MacDonald to have a debut start at 10.
Dorking received the kick-off and as was to be the theme of the day they fumbled and Havant gathered to put early pressure on the line.
However, the Dorking defence remained strong and in the ensuing scrum the young front row showed they were going to be a handful for the rest of the match.
After a good clearing kick from MacDonald, Dorking stole the resulting Havant lineout and James Faulkner was to make the first of many breaks up the centre to gain good ground.
Havant were adjudged offside at the ensuing ruck and Steve Munford stepped up to kick the penalty.
With the early skirmishes over the Red & Whites settled into a bit more of a rhythm, playing the phases well and moving the ball out to the wings.
Alrich Muller made a good inside break from his own 10-metre line and after some great inter passing with Faulkner the ball was quickly moved out to Ryan Jeffrey, who went over in the corner.
Again the restart was fumbled and Havant got possession and captain Armand Roux was adjudged offside at the breakdown, with the home penalty slotted for 8-3.
The visitors chased the restart kick and immediately put Havant under pressure - desperate defence kept the visitors out but resulted in another penalty to Dorking, which Munford converted.
Dorking really now finding their stride and moving the ball around well which meant more defensive work for Havant and hands in the ruck by them resulted in another successful penalty kick for Munford.
More pressure was put on the Havant lineout and the loose ball was gathered allowing Faulkner to break in the centre and put Muller into space, but he was eventually pulled up just short of the tryline, knocking on in the process.
Havant cleared their lines but from the resulting Dorking lineout a catch and drive was well executed with Ian White emerging as the scorer and Munford converted the extras for a 21-3 lead at the interval.
The home side started the second half well after the restart kicking through after the Dorking backs dropped the ball. The ensuing scrum turned into a mess and MacDonald was fed the ball behind his posts, under intense pressure.
He showed real composure for his age to sidestep the oncoming tacklers and jink his way to the 22 before kicking to touch on the halfway line.
However, a promising Dorking attack from the next phase of play was interrupted when the speedy Havant winger intercepted a wayward Dorking pass to go under the posts which was converted to take the maximum points.
Richie Andrews rung the changes with Qin Wiseman and Tom Bristow coming off the bench for Matt Higgins and Fred Evans and his side turned the screw and a series of five-metre scrums eventually ended with Ben Lucas picking up from No 8 and driving over. Munford converted.
With the game opening up Dorking began to run the ball at every opportunity and Roux showed he still has a yard of pace when he made a break in the centre and offloaded to Ben Knight.
Havant turned over the ball and kicked to touch, but another well executed catch and drive was deployed with Watts being the beneficiary to complete a hat-trick of tries for the back row.
With the bonus point secured and Havant heads finally going down Faulkner found space again in the centre and made good ground - the second phase saw quick hands to the wing where the ever lurking Lucas went over out wide in the corner to round off the scoring.
