Work to improve pedestrian safety on a Leatherhead roundabout is nearing completion, following a successful Advertiser backed campaign.

Starting in July, contractors from Surrey County Council have been installing £300,000 road safety measures on the Knoll Roundabout.

According to the lead engineer Dave Ellis, the majority of the work, which will see the installation of guardrails, high kerbs, crossing points for pedestrians and signs warning of pedestrians, will be finished by the time the schools return next week.

Mr Ellis said: "We are making the roundabout better and giving pedestrians better access, but the best way of crossing it is to use the footbridge [over the M25] and that is why we are putting the footpath down to encourage people to use that."

To try and minimise disruption to traffic the contractors have also been working on one trunk road of the roundabout at a time.

The council decided to start work on the roundabout following a high profile campaign launched by Leatherhead mum Sally Edwards, of Park Rise, and backed by the Advertiser.

Mrs Edwards, a mother-of-two, says that she was pleased with progress of the work so far, although some of the measures she campaigned for were not being used such as red road surfacing.

"From my experience it seems a successful way of showing that the road type has changed when they use the red road surfacing.

"Apart from that I, would say great. We are getting the high kerbing, the crossing points and also just the general resurfacing of the road because it has deteriorated so badly," she said.

Ian Lake, executive member for support services, said: "We are keen to show the public we are doing quite a bit across Surrey in terms of improvements and this is one of them where pedestrian safety is a concern on a remarkably busy roundabout."
