Combined Counties League Division One

Westfield 0 Mole Valley SCR 2

MOLE Valley SCR manager Darren Salmon believes his side will be close to securing promotion to the premier division if they beat rivals Knaphill on Saturday.

The River Lane outfit got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Westfield, a result that sets up a mouth-watering clash with fourth placed Knaphill.

"It was a much needed win and it was just nice to get the result," said Salmon. "After dropping points recently there's a few teams who now seem to think the league is theirs but we'll see about that.

"We've got Knaphill on Saturday and that is a massive game. I think if we can beat them we are almost there."

As they have done so often of late SCR started poorly against mid-table Westfield.

Slowly they began to take a foot hold in the tie and created some decent chances.

A scrappy half looked to be ending all square but having won a late corner SCR increased the pressure and Westfield failed to clear their lines. The ball fell invitingly to Richard Smith who neatly beat his man before drilling low past the home keeper giving his side a much needed breakthrough before the interval.

The second half was very much the same with Westfield working hard and SCR guilty of some poor finishing.

The game remained very much in the balance until 10 minutes from time. Mole Valley's Jay Holden scrambled the ball over the line after Richard Smith had put pressure on the home side with a mouthwatering cross.

There was a large amount of injury-time added due to a serious injury as Smith got knocked out by a flailing elbow but he was thankfully OK to continue.

This however did not afford the home side time to mount a serious threat and MVSCR were happy to have won three massive points taking their season tally to 60 with eight league games to play.

Saturday's game with Knaphill kicks-off at 3pm at River Lane.

MVSCR: Bowden, Moore (Bare), Martyn, Young, Cottrell, Smith, Kilty (L Holden), Hartnoll, Spence (Kent), J Holden, K Barry.
