SURREY manager Chris Adams has started a winter clearout by releasing former England international Chris Schofield.

The leg-spinner has not had his contract renewed and leaves with immediate effect after six seasons with the club.

Adams said he had enjoyed working with the player, who featured mainly for the Lions in one day cricket but claimed the decision was the right one as the side prepared for life in the first division of the County Championship.

"Chris has made a significant contribution during his time at the club and was a vital member of our victorious CB40 campaign last season," he said. "I have really enjoyed working with him and he has been a very popular member of the dressing room. He can be very proud of his achievements at Surrey and we wish him the best for the rest of his career."

The club have also announced that Matthew Spriegel and Chris Jordan have signed new one-year contracts with Surrey County Cricket Club, extending their stays with the club until the end of 2012.

Spriegel was one of Surrey's top performers during their successful Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign. Playing in every game of the competition the talented all-rounder struck 424 runs at an average of 53 and also took eleven wickets.

The 24-year-old, who has already recorded three first-class centuries, will be hoping to break into the four day side as Surrey take on the challenge of the First Division of the LV> County Championship next season.

Spriegel said: "I'm delighted. I've played for Surrey since I was nine so to have another year on the Surrey books and to try and break into that four day side is really nice."
