A SCUFFED shot was enough to give Godalming victory on Saturday.

It came after Chipstead keeper James Wastell had pulled off a great save from Graeme Purdy's header to concede a corner.

Chips were caught napping when Town took a short kick and slack defending gave substitute Phil Williams the time he needed to shoot on 71 minutes.

Although he scuffed the shot, Wastell was unsighted and with no defender on the near post the ball rolled in off the woodwork.

The first half was drab and with few chances neither side looked like breaking the deadlock.

Chips created a few half chances in the second half with Daniel Moody's cross skimming off Arron Smith's head when Sean Rivers was better placed to attack the ball.

Jason Thompson set Sean Rivers up for a half volley, but Garry Aulsberry was well placed to collect in the visitors' goal.

Godalming went close when Purdy drove a free-kick over Chips' defensive wall. The ball thundered against the crossbar and back in to play.

That happened just before Williams scored.

Chips pushed forward and substitute Ray Freeman netted after a fine move, but was adjudged offside and with almost the last kick of the game Nathan Green shaved the post with a fine 25-yard drive.

On a brighter note Bradley Drake returned from a two-year injury lay-off and will be able to assist in Chips' run-in.

Chipstead: Wastell, White (Freeman), Lynch, Green, Russell, Bedford, Thompson, Smith (Brown), Rivers (Drake), Morrison, Moody. Unused subs: Grizzle, A Peck.
