DORKING Wanderers got their Sussex County League campaign off to the best possible start with a comprehensive victory over Newhaven.

Lee Smith bagged a brace for the hosts during a stunning half an hour spell at the beginning of the match.

Wanderers burst out of the traps quickly and were ahead inside five minutes when a Shane Jones corner was converted by Martin Beard.

Smith doubled the advantage just five minutes later with his first of the match, opening his account from a John Hamsher cross.

It was a blistering start from the home side and they scored a third when Kevin Burgess finished off another set piece delivery.

They left the best goal of the game for last though.

Their fourth and final goal was a pure footballing move, starting off with Burgess, and going through Hamsher and Shane Duffell before Smith found the ball at his feet on the edge of the box and he thumped a stunning shot past the keeper for 4-0.

Newhaven came back into the game in the second half, but they could not find a way through a sturdy-looking Wanderers back line as they saw out the match.

Manager Marc White was delighted to have got the season up and running with bang.

He said: "It was a promising start and I think we really felt the benefit of playing some of the better sides in pre-season and working on our set pieces really paid dividends.

"We came out of the traps really quickly, which was really pleasing and when the rain came down they came back at us, but we rode it out and what was really pleasing was the clean sheet.

"We couldn't have asked much more of them."

White was full of praise for frontman Lee Smith after his opening day double and he knows just how important he will be to the side.

"He is really important to us," he said.

"With so many games coming up we have got the chance to get 18 points on the board in just three weeks which is something we are not used to.

"It's a simple fact that if we stop conceding goals and Lee scores even 80 per cent of the goals he does then we will win a huge amount of points.

"Learning to win 1-0 will be key."

Wanderers: Williams, Beard, S Duffell, Freitas, Hirrell, C Duffell, Burgess, Hamsher, Jones (Livingstone), Evans (Taylor), Smith.
