WING man Richard Smith was at the double to give Effingham and Leatherhead their second win on the bounce on Saturday.

A product of the youth system, he burst on to the senior scene with a brace of tries in the Eagles' win over Winchester to lift them off the foot of the table.

Effingham started at a pace and made the early running, attempting to move the ball largely at close quarters.

However, Winchester were equal to the task and might have taken the lead with a penalty, but it was missed.

The Eagles came back quickly with an incisive break from scrum-half Ignatious Puttu, who beat the cover with some style and delivered a delightful pass to Smith, who raced to the try line for the first score.

Effingham now had the bit between their teeth and pressed strongly, camping in the visitors' 22. Their front row were beginning to dominate and were pressurising the visiting scrum, proving a valuable source of possession.

The pressure told and Ed Ralph took a sharp opportunity from a five-metre scrum to dive over, then adding the extras with a comfortable conversion.

Play broke up thereafter, with neither side able to make sustained headway. Winchester were defending stoutly and showing no inclination to buckle despite the early setbacks.

The home side were showing more invention in attack and were rewarded by another score.

Jason Evans implemented a sweeping move which eventually gave Smith another opportunity to show the Winchester defence a clean pair of heels, again crossing the try line in the corner, though Ed Ralph was unable to add the extras.

That meant a 17-0 lead at half-time and the second period did not live up to the promise of the first, with some early yellow cards.

Play oscillated largely between the respective 10 metre lines, with the wind continuing to hamper any attempts at a fluent kicking game.

Effingham were continuing to shade possession and eventually worked an opening for Lucian Jansen who showed some genuine gas to outpace the Winchester cover defence and dot down in the corner, though again unconverted for 22-0.

Effingham then closed the game out in reasonable comfort. Eagles have a weekend off this Saturday, and are not back in action until November 7 when they travel to Weybridge Vandals.
