A motorist clocked driving at more than twice the legal limit in a speeding blackspot is facing a ban.

Shane Neil, of Poplar Road, Leatherhead, was caught driving his black Toyota car at 62mph in a 30mph zone along Gimcrack Hill.

Police in nearby Thorncroft Drive recorded the 21-year-old flouting the speed limit at 8.26am on August 22.

In a letter read to magistrates at Redhill Magistrates Court on Thursday December 3, Neil, said he had just recently bought the vehicle and was still "getting used" to driving it.

He said he had been late for work when he was caught doing more than double the speed limit.

Neil said his family had recently moved to Dorset and a driving disqualification would make it difficult to get there.

He said: "I want to apologise to being over the speed limit. It is not something I normally do.

"The car I was driving I recently bought and I am still getting to know it."

He added: "I was late for work."

Magistrates called for Neil to appear before them on December 17 and warned he faced being banned.

Rosemary Marshall, chairman of the bench, said: "We are certainly considering disqualification for driving at more than double the speed in a 30mph zone."

She added: "Being late for work is no excuse."

Neil was among thousands of speeding drivers clocked on Gimcrack Hill.

The Advertiser reported in August how out of 52,000 vehicles travelling along the road in a two-week period, 50 per cent broke the 30mph limit.

The top speed registered by one motorist was a massive 74mph on the road, which is popular with walkers, horse riders and cyclists.
