Adams said he had enjoyed working with the player, who featured mainly for the Lions in one day cricket but claimed the decision was the right one as the side prepared for life in the first division of the County Championship.
"Chris has made a significant contribution during his time at the club and was a vital member of our victorious CB40 campaign last season," he said. "I have really enjoyed working with him and he has been a very popular member of the dressing room. He can be very proud of his achievements at Surrey and we wish him the best for the rest of his career."
Schofield joined Surrey in 2006 and made a valuable contribution in all forms of the game.
The 33-year-old played in every game of Surrey's successful Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign last season, scoring 246 runs and taking seventeen wickets at an average of 23.11.
In 2007 Schofield's impressive limited over performances for Surrey saw him rewarded with an England call-up for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20, seven years after his Test debut.
The club have also announced that Matthew Spriegel and Chris Jordan have signed new one-year contracts with Surrey County Cricket Club, extending their stays with the club until the end of 2012.
Spriegel was one of Surrey's top performers during their successful Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign. Playing in every game of the competition the talented all-rounder struck 424 runs at an average of 53 and also took 11 wickets.
The 24-year-old, who has already recorded three first-class centuries, will be hoping to break into the four day side as Surrey take on the challenge of the First Division of the LV> County Championship next season.
Spriegel admitted he was pleased at having agreed a new deal with the club he had been at since childhood.
"I'm delighted," he added. "I've played for Surrey since I was nine so to have another year on the Surrey books and to try and break into that four day side is really nice."
Jordan fought his way back into the Surrey first team for the final four games of the Championship season, helping Surrey secure promotion to the First Division.
The 22-year-old fast bowler produced a match winning display in the penultimate game of the season against Essex, scoring half centuries in both innings and taking 4-57 on the final morning to lead Surrey to a vital win.
After suffering a serious back injury in 2010, the young Bajan recaptured his best form last season and has been rewarded with a new contract.
