Stags' Sibley wins top sports award
RISING star Dominic Sibley enjoyed a day to remember after being honoured for his sporting achievements in 2011 at the Aviva School Sport Matters Awards.
The all-rounder had a cracking summer season, surpassing the exploits of current England star Alastair Cook when he was a schoolboy.
The Ashtead player won the male sports student of the year award at a star-studded ceremony at the home of English rugby, Twickenham. A host of Olympic and Paralympic legends past and present – including James Cracknell, Tim Brabants, Gail Emms, Duncan Goodhew and David Weir – rubbed shoulders with 16-year-old Sibley.
The teenage prodigy amassed more than 2,200 runs, with 11 hundreds and two double hundreds.
His best score, 223, was plundered off the Worcestershire bowling when batting for Surrey in August's ECB U17 County Championship semi-final.
And Sibley's talent was recognised during this year's ESCA Bunbury U15 Festival, when he picked up four individual awards and received a scholarship to attend a training camp with the senior England team.
He made appearances for Surrey this summer, making him one of the youngest players ever to represent the county.
The culmination of all this was to be selected for the England Elite Player development programme.
Conceived in 2004 – School Sport Matters highlights exemplary practice in physical education and sport in schools across the country.
And Sibley, who already has a double century to his name in Ashtead colours, admitted the trip to the home of English rugby was a day he'll never forget.
"Winning this award means everything to me and I was completely shocked when my name got read out as the winner but it is a brilliant feeling," said former Downsend School pupil Sibley.
"The past season for me has just been fantastic with my cricket success and winning this award has been a great bonus to it all.
"Winning this award has given me a big boost just to carry on doing what I am doing, working hard and hopefully make it at the end of it all.
"My main goal is to one day play for England and I am already in the England U17 set up and have a tour of India to look forward to in February."
Sibley received his award from London 2012 hopeful, pole vaulter Steve Lewis.
And Lewis, who won silver at last year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, was quick to praise the performances of Sibley.
"The School Sports Matters Awards are a brilliant way for young people to gain recognition for the efforts they have put in, not only to school but also to sport in school too," he said.
"Young people like Dominic are an inspiration to others and this is a great to way to show that people do take notice of all the hard work they put in.
"I got into pole vaulting through school and it opened so many doors for me so hopefully this award does the same for other young people."
