EAST Surrey College students got first-hand tips from local employers to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

A range of local businesses visited the college on Gatton Point, London Road, Redhill, last week to speak to students about the reality of life in their industry.

There were talks, presentations and panels of employers answering questions, and staff hoped the dedicated week could lead to apprenticeship opportunities in the future.

A college spokesman said: "The businesses were talking about their interests and their business and how it would benefit the students to do an apprenticeship.

"It gave students a view of the reality of life in the industry and we are looking to push ahead for the future."

East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah visited the college to meet students and be filmed and interviewed by them.

A former student Ben Barter, who is now serving an apprenticeship in the IT industry, returned to the college to give current pupils an insight into the benefits of the scheme.

Representatives from British Airways and Crimestoppers came to speak to students about relevant courses, including travel and public services.

Students were also hand-picked to attend panel meetings with companies including Raven Housing Trust and Wates Construction.

At these meetings, students were given the chance to have more personal discussions about the industry and the benefits of apprenticeships to young people.
