Reigate Priory 211

Banstead 133

A Devastating opening spell from Daryl King led Reigate Priory to a crushing win over local rivals Banstead at Park Lane.

Asked to bat first, Priory slumped to 16-3 inside 11 overs as Banstead's stand in skipper Richard Bedbrook (3-26) used the conditions to perfection.

Jason Roy, Brett Forsyth and Chris Murtagh all edged behind to the keeper or slip cordon as Bedbrook dominated.

The rebuilding was left to Michael Foster and the returning Simon Ecclestone.

With the pitch still favouring the bowlers, Foster's dogged defence complimented Ecclestone's powerful driving and cutting.

Ecclestone brought up his second consecutive 50 in Llama colours, following his 75 against Dorking in the Twenty20 Cup last Thursday, off 51 balls.

After the pair had put on 73, Ecclestone was unlucky to be adjudged caught behind off the spin bowling of Mark Houghton for 54. Foster followed in the same over, as he didn't get over a sweep shot and was caught at short fine leg.

With spinners Houghton (4-61) and Surrey's Matt Spriegel (3-69) bowling well in tandem, the Llamas could have wobbled but skipper Ian Hewett and Matt Bennett dug in deep.

Bennett made a welcome return to the runs with a fluent 31 before tamely chipping Spriegel to midwicket.

At 159-6, Banstead's hopes were up but the lower order supported Hewett as he reached his first 50 of the league season. Hewett was finally out for 68, made with five fours and one six off exactly 100 balls. The Llama innings finished up on 211 in the last over.

With just under four an over required, the Banstead batsmen went off as though they needed double that.

King picked up the first wicket as keeper Burns edged one to Bennett in his first over.

Hewett at the other end picked up the wickets of Tom Lancefield and Spriegel as the Priory pair turned the screw on the Banstead batsmen.

King continued to bowl with excellent control from the Blue Anchor end, and was rewarded with four wickets in a 26 ball spell, twice being on a hat-trick.

Forsyth and Murtagh snared some great catches in the slips whilst seasoned batsman Clive Offer played around a straight one. The wicket of Offer's took King to his first five wicket haul in the Premier League and for Reigate Priory.

At 87-8 Banstead could easily have imploded, but sensible batting from James Pearce and Michael Condie took the total over 100.

The pair had put on 32 before the returning Hewett trapped Condie in front for seven and Pearce fell agonisingly short of a well deserved 50 as he hit Simon King to long on where Chris Murtagh picked up the catch and rounded off a wonderful victory for Reigate Priory.

The hero of the day was undoubtedly Daryl King, as he bowled a spell more a kin to his brother. Nineteen overs were sent down by the 19-year-old as he finished up with excellent figures of 5-51.
