SUCCESS: The Surrey Mirror swept the board at this year's newspaper of the year awards for London and the Southeast.
Star reporter Nev Wilson was singled out for special praise, for making history by winning the awards for both newcomer of the year and weekly reporter of the year, the first time this had been done.
Nev, who joined the paper in May 2007, said: "I am really chuffed. I thought getting one award was amazing. To get two awards is just unbelievable. This is one of the happiest days of my life."
The Judges praised his strong string of scoops including a farmer who built a "secret" castle inside a haystack and Tory Leader David Cameron leaping to safety as his helicopter made an emergency landing.
From The Mirror sports desk, Simon Osborn was named sports reporter of the year, beating off fierce competition from daily titles in Portsmouth, Brighton and Bournmouth.
News reporter David Farbrother was also shortlisted in the newcomer of the year category, and highly commended for his work.
The awards were held at London Zoo, with the Mirror's sister title the Crawley News scooping the free newspaper of the year title.

“I would just like to say thank you for including our support group for parents/carers of children with special needs in your In Brief colomn. This was read by parents who have since come along. We appreciate any publicity about Face2Face and perhaps you could include our group occasionally on the noticeboard pages or anywhere you feel we may fit.
I am the coordinator for the East Surrey Face2Face based at Reigate & Redhill YMCA”
