SURREY and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust – which runs East Surrey Hospital – has taken another step to becoming a foundation trust by advertising for a new chief executive.

Current boss Michael Wilson, who was taken on in a temporary capacity two-and-a-half years ago, hopes to remain in charge, though his contract runs out at the end of March.

For the hospital to achieve foundation status it must have a permanent chief executive but rather than appoint Mr Wilson immediately, the trust's board has decided to open the role to other candidates.

Mr Wilson said: "The trust has been performing well in all areas and is going for foundation status.

"It's great for staff and patients and this is now part of the next step. I intend to apply for the post, but it will be competitive. "There are many aspects now where the trust is performing strongly."

Mr Wilson pointed to the massive infrastructure developments that have been taking place at the hospital, most recently the creation of the new entrance and the development of new wards and facilities.

"There's more to do, we need to learn from lessons and mistakes we make," Mr Wilson added. "It's been a fantastic journey over the last few years and I hope I've brought good leadership and qualities to the organisation."

Applications are being accepted for the chief executive role and it is believed interviews could begin next month.
