Surrey's Dernbach receives first England Test call-up
SURREY manager Chris Adams is convinced Jade Dernbach has all the credentials required to make a big impact should he get the final nod for England.
The young seam bowler has been called up to the squad for the second Test match against Sri Lanka that begins at Lord's tomorrow.
Dernbach was given his chance after Jimmy Anderson picked up a side strain in the dramatic victory over the tourists in the first Test at Cardiff.
The 25-year-old will compete with Middlesex's Steve Finn for the final bowling berth.
And if it is Dernbach that captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower opt for, Adams has no fears that the confident quickie will grasp his opportunity with both hands.
"It's every cricketer's ambition to represent their country, it's fantastic for Jade and I'm delighted for him as are all his team mates," he said.
"It's been a big few months for him. He went away with the Lions and did very well, got the call for the World Cup but didn't play and then put in a great performance a couple of weeks ago for the Lions again that has really moved him up the ladder and given him this opportunity.
"He is exactly the kind of character that you would want in the team and the type of cricketer we are trying to produce here at Surrey.
"He would run through brick walls for his team. He has lots of skill and ability and we have drilled the commitment and discipline into his game. Now he is reaping the rewards."
Despite being born in Johannesburg, Dernbach moved to the UK at a young age and has been brought through the ranks at the Oval. He is a graduate of the county's successful Pemberton Greenish Academy.
With Kevin Pietersen and Chris Tremlett already in the national line-up Adams is delighted that Surrey are beginning to get players through to the England team again after a barren spell for the past few years.
A final decision on his inclusion will be made in the morning after Strauss and coach Flower assess conditions at the home cricket.
But Adams believes Dernabach has every chance of being the man selected.
"Obviously it's disappointing for Jimmy Anderson but it gives Jade this opportunity," he said. "I think you would have to say he has a great chance of playing.
"Steven Finn may be the next one off the rank, but if they get to Lord's and the conditions are as the are usually you are going to want a bowler who will pitch it up and swing the ball, and that's exactly what Jade can do. That's why he's been selected."
