Tanners hold league leaders
JUST two days after enduring 120 minutes of League Cup semi-final action, Leatherhead produced an impressive performance at league leaders Folkestone to take a share of the spoils.
Despite the undoubted fatigue within the side, Mick Sullivan's team looked the better side for the most part and might even have nicked victory against a team who have only lost three times all season.
The Tanners started the brighter of the two teams, showing no signs of tiredness from the penalty shootout drama of Thursday night.
Although there were few clear-cut chances falling their way.
Kev Terry volleyed well wide and Dom O'Shea hooked just wide after good work from Terry to keep the ball in on the right.
O'Shea then tried to side foot home from just inside the area when he really ought to have put his foot through it, and the chance was blocked.
Chris Boulter was just not tall enough to head a Mark Simmons free-kick on target before the hosts had their first chance of the half, on 43 minutes, when Frankie Chappell met a corner with a free header, but could only direct it straight at Colin Harris. Brendon Cass then brilliantly volleyed just over the top as the first half ended goalless.
Whatever was said in the home dressing room at the break certainly had an impact on the way they played as Folkestone fashioned a great chance with barely 30 second of the second half gone.
Cass somehow flicked the ball away from Williams as he was prostrate and Josh Burchell had a clear run in from the left hand side. His low cross was cleared right back to him, but he sidefooted wide when he should have hit the target.
Another man who should have hit the target was Cass 10 minutes later. He blazed over from close range after Chris Boulter had blocked a Darren Smith shot.
Cass then headed wide in the 58th minute as the hosts started to press.
New signing Jack Macleod entered proceedings in the 68th minute and his first action was to rifle a low cross into the danger area where O'Shea just couldn't get a touch on it.
Macleod shot horribly wide six minutes from time after a good move from back to front before substitute Tommy Hutchings made a good chance for himself in the last minute, but his shot on the turn was well saved down low to his right by home keeper Jack Delo and honours remained even.
