Villagers are set to launch a fighting fund to stop a Tesco being in Ashtead.

Both the Ashtead Residents' Association and campaign group SAVE (Save Ashtead's Village Environment) are "working hard" to contest appeals lodged by Tesco to build a second store in the village.

The chain has had two plans to build a store and nine flats in The Street refused by Mole Valley District Council – one last March and the other last month.

A public inquiry is set to be held by the Planning Inspectorate on the two appeals but a date, time or venue has not been set.

Despite no timescale being set, Paul Le Versha, chairman of the residents' association, said: "We are working with SAVE to co-ordinate actions against the appeal.

"We are going to fight hard and work in support of the defence that will be put forward by Mole Valley District Council but we will have to face the considerable expense of hiring the expertise to do that.

"We don't have the expertise in planning law and we know Tesco will hire the very top people to make sure one of these appeals goes through.

"We will be starting a campaign to raise funds in a couple of weeks because to stand a good chance of fighting Tesco we will need to raise tens of thousands."

Gillian Russell, spokesman for SAVE, said town planner Geoff Douglass, from Pelham Planning Associates, will be one expert representing the two groups at the public inquiry.

She added: "The fact that Tesco is trying to get the first larger proposal through shows Ashtead that they have no intention of listening to us at all.

"I think we have an excellent chance of winning both appeals because our case against Tesco is founded on strong planning grounds and robust data."

Miss Russell, who has a masters in town planning, is also urging Mole Valley District Council to take a firm stance against the chain.

She said: "Tesco's application can only proceed if Tesco has access to the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park.

As the Advertiser went to press a Tesco spokesman was not available to comment.

“I agree, lets SAVE our villiage way of life, I have loved nothing more then beauty of the picturesque waste land nestled in our quaint Village high street. Incase you didnt realise, that was sarcasm! Having a Tesco on the high street is only going ot have a positive impact, and im not Pro Tesco in anyway, it could be any supermarket - although, I doubt my fellow residents would object to a Waitrose being there. If this cause has such backing, and the residents that object simply boycott the store then the venture will soon fail and Tesco will up sticks and leave. The fact of the matter is, if you want to save your local shops, then continue to use them, thats fine, but bare in mind, there are lots of residents that are not able to afford the prices charged in small independants, what is wrong with those people being able to have a choice.

It will bring Jobs, Accomadation and rid the highstreet of the image degrading waste land that currently inhabits, as well as giving the less well off the opportunity to save some of there hard earned money. Please stop with the Snobbery, it really is embarrasingly pathetic”

“Your real problem at Ashtead is very simple. Its a nasty infliction that has spread across communities like Ashtead and is strangling the local facilities. What is this infliction that causes so much irritation? It is called or they are called nimbies, for those who do not know it means Not In My Back Yard and Surrey is rife with them. Their only concern is their house prices and anything that is deemed to change that is a danger to be eradicated for the house price good, NOT the community good. Everybody knows having a decent supermarket in your village will encourage local business not kill it. People from just outside ashtead will go there to use the shop and the rest of the village. But maybe thats what SAVE is more worried about, more people coming there which will mean more houses and a threat to their house prices.
I would like all those in SAVE to own up too, how many of them actually shop in Ashtead?. You can bet your bottom dollar most of them don't or use a similar supermarket in Leatherhead because aha they can't get what they want locally! Well deary me! Come on Ashtead you don't need SAVE and the nimbys you need decent local facilities, vote yes for Tesco's and watch your community grow again.”

“I totally agree with caroline ,and i speak as an ashtead shop worker, where do all the people campaining shop? because its not in Ashtead .I belive residents cant wait to get to Leatherhead or Epsom to shop in there superstoes (which is probably what is causing all the trafic). But they dont want it on there doorstep.(Is this because it might lower the value of there propertys).I for one know it will bring people in to the village it may even make some of the so called loyal residents shop there for a change.I also belive there is a kind of snbbery in Ashtead ,why?it has had a very high crime rate recently and most people i know just use it as a way to get to leatherhead or epsom. If everyone really wants to save dying Ashtead then we have to get people to start shopping here.”

“Well linda what do you think should happen to the waste land, which is exactly what it is and had been ever since I can remember! So what about any business that it would bring to the area and the JOBS it would create just like I said before we are on the back of a resession.
There us nothing wrong with liking your village the way it is however things have to change over time it's life! Just imagine what life would be like in your village if people had odjected 100 years ago to things like you are now.
So why do residents if ashtead get to decide what happens in Malden rushett moving business from the area to redhill that's very silly dong you think? The helicopter noise was more likely to have come from the motorway!

Further to your comment linda I think I could 100% say that after spending much of my childhood in ashtead and still many friends that there that I could show you a lot os streets that are a damn site worse than leatherhead town.”

“Further to Caroline of Leatherhead's comment, perhaps if the residents of Leatherhead had taken the time and trouble to protect their village it wouldn't be consistently voted to have one of the worst High Streets in the country.

If Caroline had read the objections of Ashtead residents she would be aware that it's not about having a supermarket, it's about the size and its impact on village life. What's wrong with liking village life? Life is about much more than supermarkets.”

“I think this whole thing us stupid! The residents of ashtead object to everything and anything they are snobs! The new tesco would create new jobs and god forbid that on the back if a recession! I know they think that the local shops will suffer but those that object to tesco being there won't shop there and the people that can't afford to shop in the small expensive local shops will have somewhere to go.
I saw in the advertiser a couple of weeks ago that ashtead residents have won a battle to get a helicopter ride company from Malden rushett it's not even in ashtead and the noise was disterbing them, what about the train are they going to object and get that moved next or the roads.
I HOPE TESCO WINS THE BATTLE AGAINST THE ASHTEAD SNOBS!!!!!”

“Totally agree with the SAVE spokesperson. Tesco have rapidly dropped their pretence of 'listening' to Ashtead residents and reverted to trying to push through their original huge store plan with no regard for the devestating consequences and urbanisation of the entire village.

Anyone who thinks Tesco is acting in the best interests of the village or its residents is naive.”
