Wanderers draw at home to league leaders
DORKING Wanderers had to come from behind to earn a share of the spoils with league leaders Bexhill at the weekend, but manager Marc White believes it was two points dropped, rather than one gained.
The visitors took an early lead after a defensive mix-up which White described as "like the Keystone Cops", but fought back with a stunning second half display and could, and perhaps should have bagged all three points.
White said: "We had the chance to close the gap at the top, we were by far the better side and it really was two points dropped.
"I'm very disappointed, but looking at the last two games, we would have taken four points from six against Saltdean and Bexhill because they are tough games."
Wanderers were a goal down inside six minutes when two defenders went for the same ball and collided, leaving a visiting striker the easiest of opportunities to open the scoring.
The hosts dominated possession for the remainder of the half, but did not really turn it into clear-cut chances.
It was not until the second period when they really hit top gear, producing their "best play of the season".
White added: "We pinned them back in their own half and it was only a matter of time before we got the equaliser and then the winner.
"We played some really good football, but they defended for their lives.
"They were there for the taking, it was like men versus boys in that second half but we just couldn't break them down."
Wanderers grabbed the equaliser with 20 minutes to go and it came from the boot of new signing James Evans.
He sent a half-volley flying into the back of the net after a fine team move.
Kevin Cooper had a couple of good opportunities to find a winner, but the points were shared.
Wanderers are at home to Newhaven, who lie one place below them, on Saturday and White knows that his side have to kick on if they are to realise their dream of promotion.
He said: "We have now played exactly 50 per cent of our league games so at some point we have got to put a string of results together and that needs to begin now.
"When we do that it will propel us up the league.
"It needs to start here but Newhaven have scored 18 goals in their last three or four games, so it's not an easy one, but we have got to win our home games."
