Wanderers ease into semi-finals
THE 3-2 scoreline suggests the game between Bexhill and Dorking Wanderers was a close affair, but in reality Wanderers eased into the semi-finals of the Division Three cup.
Wanderers did dominate for large periods of the game and could have scored six or seven goals, but missed chances and defensive lapses meant they had to do things the hard way and come from behind at half-time.
The visitors were missing Craig Duffel through a back injury, and rested Lee Smith, while they also gave a debut to former AFC Wimbledon midfielder Lee Passmore.
Manager Marc White said: "We really slaughtered them, for the first 35 minutes we were totally dominant and to be fair I wouldn't have been surprised if we scored six or seven or even more, but they scored a deflection and a good free kick and we were behind at half-time."
A long range Shane Duffel effort gave Wanderers an early lead, but Benjamin's White's shot was deflected past Purkiss and a gap in the visiting wall gave Lee Roberts a second for Bexhill from a free kick.
White added: "It really was a case of thinking 'is it going to be one of those days?' But I looked on the pitch at the quality we have got and the message to the lads was 'don't panic, relax', because we were so clearly better."
And the quality of the Wanderers side shone through in the second half.
Kevin Joyce bagged his second goal in as many games to level the scores on the hour mark and Shane Jones hit the winner after rounding the keeper.
The victory sets up a semi-final clash with Division Three leaders Bosham in a repeat of last year's semi-final, that went the way of Wanderers.
He said: "The central defensive partnership of Burgess and Beard is looking really strong and Dean Milton has been influential recently on and off the pitch as we turn things around.
"There's lots of work still to do, and I'm not going to get over excited about four wins in a row, but it's coming on nicely right now and hopefully we can get the same result as last year in the match with Bosham."
