Wanderers' promotion hopes dashed
DORKING Wanderers' promotion push is all but over.
That is what manager Marc White said after watching his side fail to beat nine-man Bexhill at the weekend.
Inconsistency has been a buzz word for White all season. His side have won half of their 20 games so far, and lost six, leaving them 11 points of the promotion places.
He conceded that Wanderers would not be achieving promotion this year after a 3-2 defeat at league leaders Bexhill, during which the hosts played 45 minutes with just nine men.
White said: "I think we are officially out of the hunt now and that's really disappointing.
"This is our first blank season in our short history, we have either got to a cup final or got promotion.
"It's really frustrating to stay in this division for a third year, but we are going to stick together and try and finish as high as possible."
Wanderers were 2-0 down early on in the match with a strike following a goalmouth scramble and a penalty from Ben White after Martin Beard had made a bad challenge in the box.
The hosts were cruising, but they had two men sent off just before half-time to give the visitors an opening.
Louis Freitas pulled a goal back, but a long free-kick was volleyed home soon after to extinguish any chance of a comeback.
White described the performance as "unforgivable."
He said: "They defended stoutly but there's no excuse for not breaking down a team with only nine men.
"One of our problems has been inconsistency, but all the way through the season we have had periods of time where we have been missing key players.
"We can point to that, but we have lacked quality and we have under achieved massively."
White got himself on the scoresheet, nodding home after Matty Evans had flicked a cross on to him, and it was injuries that forced him to be named as a substitute in the first place.
He added: "There was one bit of good news, and that was me scoring, but it was a bittersweet feeling scoring and losing.
"The management team is all committed to getting it right for next season now and we will use the last few games to look at players and build the team for next season."
