Wanderers to 'push for promotion'
DORKING Wanderers are well set for a promotion push this season, according to manager Marc White.
At the midway stage of the season, his side sit sixth in the Sussex County League Division Three, just seven points off the top.
And after an up and down first half of the campaign that White was "not particularly happy with", he is hoping his side can maintain their good run of form and move up the table.
He said: "The next couple of months is about the push for promotion. This time last year we put together a really good run and we are looking to do the same again.
"Any team that goes and puts together five straight wins will find themselves top of the league and with any luck we'll be the ones to do it.
"In hindsight I'm not really happy with how it's gone so far, we had a troubled start and there was a time when I didn't think we were fit enough or sharp enough, but we have only lost one of our last 11 game, so our form is really good at the moment and despite not having had many games we have stepped up training and there's no better team on paper in the league than us."
Wanderers have re-signed former centre forward Matty Evans and left sided player Louis Freitas to bolster a squad that is packed full of local talent.
White added: "The new signings like Kevin Cooper, Martin Beard and John Hamsher are looking really good, but what's important for me is the fact that we have got a lovely blend of quality players and 75 per cent of them are local players.
"A string of wins now will put us in the frame to compete because the league is wide open."
White also outlined the club's plans for the future, not just on the field, but off it as well.
He said: "We are just about to start phase two of the ground redevelopment. It's nothing spectacular but certain things will enable us to step up the ladder further.
"We have got substantial developments to the changing rooms to do, we need to do some upgrading with those and we also need to improve the hard standing areas for the supporters because we do get an average attendance of about 60.
"We are also going to improve the catering and refreshment facilities because we are acutely aware that we need the best facilities to attract the best players."
White said that the club will do and spend "whatever it takes", but were grateful of the help of volunteers and sponsors for making things happen.
"Most of the labour is done by volunteers," he said.
"And we have a hard-working committee and are also fortunate enough to have lots of local sponsors that enable us to finance what we do. Two years ago we didn't have any water or power so we've come a long way and it's an ongoing project."
