DORKING Wanderers emulated Premier League side Tottenham on Saturday by demolishing their opponents 9-1 after only leading 1-0 at the break.

Wanderers, who maintained their promotion push, while also boosting their goal difference, put strugglers Hurstpierpoint to the sword thanks to a double hat-trick from Lee Smith and a mere single hat-trick from Craig Duffell.

You would not have imagined the final outcome at the end of the first period though.

Wanderers were dominant and clinical, but only led 1-0 at half-time as Hurstpierpoint got men behind the ball and made it difficult for the promotion-chasers.

Hurspierpoint used up all their energy in that first half though, sitting deep and soaking up the pressure and Wanderers, and in particular Smith, ran riot after the break.

Manager Marc White was delighted.

He said: "We spoke about moving the ball about quicker to create more openings at half-time and it was fantastic to see Lee Smith with his shooting boots on again.

"It was against really poor opposition, but it was a really pleasing performance. Beating teams like that is like going through the motions now, the big games are against teams in the top half."

Wanderers remained in fifth place, despite such a comprehensive victory because the four teams above them in the league all won too.

White's team can now concentrate wholly on the league after losing 2-0 to Bosham in the Challenge Cup semi-final.

He said: "It's all about the league now. Wednesday's game was really difficult, but on another day it could have been 3-0 to us. We dominated possession but didn't carve out enough opportunities, our front three had an off day, unlike on Saturday!

"But the last time we didn't reach a cup final, which was about three seasons ago, we won the league, so it would be nice if history could repeat itself."

Wanderers host TD Shipley this Saturday at 3pm and White said it was a "potential banana skin" for his side.

Wanderers: McBride, Freitas, Campbell, Burgess, Davis, Hirrell, C Duffell, M Evans (Wassell), Jones, Smith.
