Warlingham 160

WARLINGHAM are now certain to be relegated to division four of the Surrey Championship after this 76 run defeat against fellow strugglers Old Wimbledonians.

Old Wimbledonians are the only team that Warlingham have beaten this year, but they were better side in this match at Coombe Lane that ultimatley confirmed the inevitable for Wars.

The home team benefited from an excellent innings of 82 in 105 balls at the top of the order by their occasional player, Navin Nayak.

His second-wicket partnership of 145 with Greg Atherstone, who made 41, set up the challenging first innings total of 236 all out after Warlingham won the toss and decided to field first.

The visitor's bowler's were unable to contain Wimbledonian's batsmen and by the time the Nayak was eventually caught off Devik Amin the run rate was well more than five an over.

Despite a middle-order collapse, in which Devik Amin took two further wickets, the hosts recovered from 178-6 to 236 before Mahesh Amin took the last two wickets in the final over.

Devik's 3-36 from 10 overs was his best yet for the ones, while Mahesh was as economical as ever with 2-29 from 9.5 overs, and Shane Patel took 3-21 from seven on his return to the side, but they did not receive enough support from the other bowlers.

In reply Warlingham's second wicket pairing of Shame Patel and Dan Chrystie, promoted to number three in the absence of Alex Pizzey, batted well and kept the scoreboard ticking over at about the required rate, but Patel was well caught by Jaco Louw for 31.

The introduction of the slower bowlers, Louw, Cezar Redeker and Donald Dunsmore, slowed the scoring but Chrystie reached his maiden first XI 50 from 71 balls.

However, he was bowled immediately afterwards and Morris was out in the same over.

Nigel Field looked as solid as ever in his 36, but the rest of the order batted as befits a team at the bottom of the table.

All three spinners gave the visitors problems but it was Dunsmore who took the wickets, 6-26 in his 10 overs.

Warlingham ended on 160 much closer than had seemed likely, but never really threatening to pull off the win they so-desperately needed.

In the Surrey Championship 2nd XI Division Two return fixture

Warlingham faired no better.

Despite bowling Old Wimbledonians out for just 194 Wars were unable to chase the total and were dismissed for just 117 in 36.4 overs.

The result leaves Wars second from bottom and with relegation looming.

It was better news for the cub's third team who beat Old Emanuel in the Surrey Championship third XI league division two.

Wars dismissed Old Emanuel for just 101 before chasing down the total for the loss of six wickets.

The nine men of the Old Boys were dismissed in only 20.3 overs by Ranjit Rekhi who took 6-52 and Wajahat Aleem with 2-31.

Warlingham were more circumspect with their batting, and took 34 overs to reach the target, with Rekhi starring with bat as well as ball with his 34 not out.
