Surrey Championship Division Three

Streatham & Marlborough 249-9

Warlingham 151

WARLINGHAM were outclassed by strong opposition who thoroughly deserved their 98 run victory.

The rough outfield meant Warlingham's opening bowlers, Dan Chrystie and Ricky Patel had to swap ends after an over each so that the left arm over Chrystie could find a decent foothold.

Warlingham, fielding two father and son pairings, won the toss and asked Streatham and Marlborough to bat first and, after Wes Lind and Nihal Patel had reduced the home team to 136-5 after the 29th over, the plan seemed to be working.

Dan Ellis made 47 opening the innings and Kirt DeRuyter got 35.

But the middle order failed to capitalise on good starts until Alexis Fuller and Dave Field came together and added 57.

Patel in particular made the batsmen work for every run and thoroughly deserved his first five-wicket haul for the first team with 5-58.

However, with Fuller making 32 and Field reaching 42 not out the home side were able to declare on 249-9.

In reply Streatham & Marlborough started with the old ball for nine overs but took the new one as the second wicket partnership between Alex Pizzey and Dilpesh Amin looked reasonably secure against the slower bowlers.

Pizzey played several high class shorts, but his luck ran out on 36.

Amin departed for 23 two overs later exposing the fragile Warlingham middle order, who, true to form, failed to make any impression. The ensuing procession was halted for a while when Dan Chrystie joined Andy McNamee and added 41, but after McNamee skied a catch it was only a question of whether the remaining batsmen could hang on.

This looked unlikely when last man Ricky Patel joined Chrystie.

However, they managed to keep the home team's best bowlers, Lassana Dias and Chris McGill, at bay until Chrystie was caught at slip with eight balls left.

Dias took 4-21 and McGill 4-44 as Streatham & Marlborough wrapped up a comfortable 98 run victory.

In the Surrey Championship 2nd XI Division Two, Warlingham's second string slumped to defeat in a thrilling match with Ashtead.

Warlingham batted first and made just 173, but came close to defending it and had Ashtead nine down in reply.

Denham Earl (44) and Amit Patel (33) set the home team on the road to a decent total but Len Sanderson (5-25) did the damage.

Michael Sanderson made 58 at the top of the Ashford order but third change bowler Dave Andrews made life difficult for the visitors as he took 4-23, but they limped over the line.
