This was typical of the sporting scene across East Surrey last weekend - and more games are likely to be called off for waterlogging this weekend.

The Sussex County League has said that all games - such as Redhill v Mile Oak - under its jurisdiction will be assumed to be off unless they hear from clubs by 5pm Thursday.

In the Sussex County RUR Charity Cup, not under the league's remit, Lingfield are due to host Seaford, but boss Steve Perkins said the chances of the game being staged were "looking grim".

Chipstead football and rugby clubs are due to play at home.

With snow still covering the frozen pitches, rugby officials say the game is likely to be off with a pitch inspection planned for Friday evening and the possibility of a Sunday match, subject to agreement from opposition and league officials. Updates will follow on their website http://www.chipstead.co.uk/.

Officials from the football club, due to host Met Police on Saturday, proudly told the Mirror throughout the autumn that they cannot remember the postponement for waterlogging, because the club is on such high ground.

However, on Thursday the high ground meant there was still several inches of snow on the pitch.

All spectators are advised to check with their choice of venues before travelling.

In the Ryman One South, Chatham are due to host Merstham, while Whyteleafe travel to Eastbourne.

Whyteleafe Football Club's league cup tie is one of several yet to be played and a fourth attempt will be made on Monday.

On Tuesday, Chipstead and Merstham are due to play home games in the Ryman Division One South.

In the long-term, call-offs are causing a fixture backlog.

The London and South East RFU still has not made the draw, involving Chipstead, for the fifth round of the National Junior Vase, because two games from the previous round have not been completed.

The next round is due on February 6, but reserve dates have already been used for rearranged league fixtures and teams are faced with cramming games in.

Last weekend's Old Reigatian postponement against Lewes has, along with all fixtures for that date, been resheduled for February 27.

Surrey RFU tournaments could be impacted, with clubs already behind scheduled round dates.

Youth football leagues are struggling.

Only five Surrey Youth League fixtures have taken place since December 13.

Players face two games in a weekend, either Saturday and Sunday or double headers, and as a last resort playing in half-term or during the Easter weekend.

"Our teams don't have the opportunity to play midweek," said League secretary Frank Thompson.

"The Tandridge League is in the same boat. If we have another two or three weeks of this weather, we won't be able to finish the season."
