Wortley scares leaders but Lingfield get out of the Woods
Fullers Surrey County League Division Two
Lingfield 195
Woodmansterne 180
Leaders Lingfield survived a major scare to see off a stern challenge from Woodmansterne.
Having chosen to field, Woods started well with Anderson finding a way through Mitchell's defence to leave Lingfield one down, and struggling to score above three runs an over.
Further wickets for Anderson (2-34) and Selby (1-30) kept Woods in the hunt, although Lingfield began to score increasingly quickly.
Leg-spinner Wortley's introduction did little to stem the flow of runs, but he picked up wickets regularly on a helpful track to finish with 5-56, while at the other end Hiscox struck twice in quick time to clean up the tail and bowl Lingfield out for 195.
Woods opening problems continued as Prior and Squires, were both adjudged lbw sweeping against Lingfield's spinners to leave Woods reeling at 30-2.
Goodwin also followed shortly after before Vagg and Wortley rebuilt the innings, but Vagg (38) was caught in the gully when well set and then after a calling error had stranded Jacobs for a duck Wortley (23) became Lingfield's fourth lbw.
Woods tail bravely chased victory, with Anderson (44 no) in particular excelling with some fine drives and pulls, but wickets continued to fall.
With 15 needed from three overs, a ball struck number 11 Hiscox on the pads and a vociferous appeal persuaded the umpire to issue a fifth lbw, to Lingfield's joy and Woods' dismay.
