MINDLESS thugs trashed the ornaments left by grief-stricken family members in a garden of remembrance in a "wicked" and "disgraceful" vandalism spree.

Police officers are appealing for witnesses after the culprits smashed several memorials left in the Reigate Garden of Remembrance.

Two concrete pixies perched on a see-saw bench were decapitated, a ceramic swan was smashed against a tree, a bird bath was removed and dumped nearby and a wind chime made of sea-shell was broken in the vandalism spree.

Neighbourhood sergeant Simon Ward said: "Desecrating a Garden of Remembrance in this way is a wicked and offensive thing to do and I hope anyone who has any information regarding those responsible comes forward.

"All of the ornaments had been left at the garden in memory of loved ones who have passed and to have those memories shattered like this is particularly disgraceful."

The garden, in Bancroft Court, Reigate, was designed specifically for the placement of cremated remains so families have a place to visit their passed loved-ones.

It is not known exactly when the damage was caused, but police believe it took place between Friday February 26 and Monday March 1.

Local officers have stepped up patrols in an attempt to stop criminal damage of this kind before it escalates.

Anyone with any information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference RB/10/1876.

“How sad. I took my five young children to see their fathers plot on 22nd February what would have been his 46th Birthday. I breath a sigh of relief that they did not have to withness the distruction that has been caused.”
