ADVERTISER reporter Edward Gent Stepped Up on Saturday and got stuck in at the Leatherhead Community Garden.

As others nursed their Friday night hangovers, Edward joined volunteers at the garden for a couple of hours' hard labour.

With signs to be put up and planting beds and compost bins to be built, there was plenty of work to get on with – between occasional coffee breaks.

Edward said: "I really enjoyed my day at the community garden, so much so that I think it's almost cheating to call it volunteering.

"The volunteers were very welcoming and there was plenty of time for chatting in between jobs.

"The highlight was definitely having an entourage of curious chickens following wherever you went in the hope that you might dig up some worms."
