A driver has been taken to hospital, and a lamppost remains lying on the road, following a smash on the A217.

Traffic has ground to a halt on the Brighton Road following the crash at 2.30pm between a silver Mercedes and a silver Vauxhall Zafira.

Police and ambulance were at the scene by 2.40pm and one of the drivers was taken to East Surrey Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened near the Shell petrol station, on the junction with the A240 Reigate Road, Burgh Heath.

Police and Ambulance were called to the scene following reports of a collision.

The north and southbound stretches were closed off as police attempted to clear the area of debris and assess the scene.

The southbound route was reopened at about 3.50pm.

Tailbacks on the north and south bound stretch have been reported with diversions in place.

Traffic was reportedly at a standstill as far back as the roundabout connecting to Chipstead Lane, north of junction eight with the M25 and Reigate.

Police told the Mirror that restrictions would remain in place while street furniture was being moved.
