This is Surrey

OVER the next few months I will be putting in a few chill out sessions in what has been a very busy season so far.

I am not complaining as I like to be in the thick of the action but around this time of the season a few night carp sessions are going to be on the agenda amongst my match calendar. The Old Lake at Bury Hill seems to come alive in late summer, early autumn and only last weekend the lake produced a cracking 35lbs 6oz common carp, the biggest so far this season.

My personal best from the lake stands at 28lbs 2oz caught on a cold January night two seasons back, so my aim is going to be to land my first 30 pounder. But just the fact that I will be angling under the stars will be good enough for me.

My plan of action will be simple, two rod set up armed with 12lbs line attached to a leadcore leader, 2oz pear lead with a semi fixed connector finished off with a size eight drennan esp barb less hook on an eight inch braided link. Bait will be a Richworth KG1 14mm boilie cast out with a small pva bag of crushed boilie plus a few catapulted boilie loose offerings.

The important thing when targeting the carp in the old estate lake is not to overfeed and encourage the huge shoals of bream into your catchment area.

With summer fast disappearing my eagerly awaited autumn schedule will be next up with a two day Barclays National event to look forward to at Monk Lakes on September 11-12. Local knowledge should see us in good shape against some of the northern teams.

During October I take another long trek off to Stafford Moor in Devon to compete in the GOT Baits week long festival and to be honest I can't wait. Fingers crossed the day after my return I will be lining up in the £3000 winner take all Fish To Win final, but first I have to qualify from at least one of three attempts at Monk Lakes, Hartleylands and Tylers Common.

I believe there are still some places left for some of the other qualifiers and details can be gained from organiser John Bell on 07724 841722 who has asked me to spread the word. Details can also be viewed on www.fish-to-win.co.uk website.

This weekend I will be at Framfield Fishery in East Sussex competing on Spring lake, which throws up some enormous weights on the pole and paste.

I will be busy later in the week making up some beefy pole rigs to suit with most of my hooks being the brilliant new series 861 hook from Tubertini. I strongly recommend this hook if you fish plenty of carp waters and suffer from straightened hooks and pulling out.

Last Wednesday I was out on the punts at Bury in front of the Pole Fishing magazine cameras for a pole fishing from the punts feature. Although it was a bit clumsy at times using a long pole to ship in and out from across open water I had some good fun landing 16 bream up to 4lbs in a short three hour session.
