Adams asks for patience

Chris Adams admits his side have "a lot of work to do" but says it is important supporters are patient.

The Surrey manager watched his side limp to a draw in game one of the Championship but insists things will get better.

He said: "You've got to be honest and I think we were outplayed in the two main departments. They were better than us with both the bat and ball.

"The two batsmen imposed themselves on day one and built a big partnership. But I think a lot of credit should go to our bowling unit for coming back.

"The two days lost to the weather probably went in our favour more than theirs in terms of us getting an end result but I know there is a lot of improving to do."

Adams said Surrey fans should give the young players time to adapt to first class cricket and insisted they would be better players for the experience.

"We had a very young side out there. Laurie Evans was given his first opportunity and they have to go through that process if they are to get better," added Adams.

The Brown Caps were without three senior batsmen for the Gloucestershire game with Mark Butcher (injured), Mark Ramprakash (suspended) and Scott Newman all out.

No reason as to why Newman was left out the match squad was given by Surrey at the time of going to press.

Adams also praised his bowling opening partnership of Jade Dernbach and Andre Nel.

"I thought Andre and Jade brought us back into the game very well with the new ball," he added.

"Jade bowled with a lot of vigour and energy and once he got his wicket was a real threat. He needs now to bowl like that and settle himself right from the start and hit the ground running.

"Bowling with Andre will help him in that and as far as I'm concerned he [Nel] is our benchmark bowler. I think his 18 overs yielded something like 46 runs and the squad was desperate for someone to bowl with his aggression."
