Grieving pub regulars are planning an annual talent contest in memory of a popular landlord.

John Watkiss, landlord of the Botley Hill Farmhouse, Limpsfield Road, died on January 10 from a stroke, aged 64.

Friends inspired by his commitment to bring quality music acts to the Farmhouse's 200 seater marquee are planning to stage a talent show in his memory.

The proposed contest would showcase the best entertainers from the area in a one-off show.

John's wife of 40 years, Shelagh, 62, said: "The main thing he has always loved was music and he loved being able to bring great musicians to the farmhouse.

"It was the best way for him to mix business and pleasure."

Mrs Watkiss said she had been overwhelmed by the amount of cards and messages of support she had received since John's death.

She said: "I've had such lovely words from so many people, I couldn't believe the response.

"You never realise quite how much these cards help when you see them sitting on someone else's shelf.

"But when you lose someone close to you, one thing that really helps is the handwritten notes you get from friends and family.

"Nearly all the cards say the same thing, that John was a kind, gentle man.

"He was the same ever since we met as teenagers."

Mrs Watkiss now plans to retire from managing the Farmhouse, which she took over with John back in 1993.

Businessman Paul Shed hopes to take over the reins, and the 39-year-old is hoping to carry on Mr Watkiss' legacy by organising a talent show.

He said: "I was really upset.

"I've been working closely with John over the past year.

"We want to hold an annual talent contest, maybe call it The John Watkiss Trophy."

Friends and family of John Watkiss were due to attend his funeral at Worthing Crematorium yesterday (Wednesday).
