HMS Pinafore

Godalming Operatic Society (GOS)

The Borough Hall, Godalming

Coming to The Leatherhead Theatre

It is hard to believe that the first performance HMS Pinafore was as long ago as May 25, 1878, staged at London's rather inadequate Opera Comique theatre.

The vigorous sea-salty tunes and Gilbert's pointed satire at the navy of the day and British self-conceit of the era have stood the test of time, still capable of filling theatres with capacity audiences when performed to the high standard that Godalming Operatic Society (GOS) are capable.

GOS are highly practised at Gilbert & Sullivan operas, always capturing so effectively the original innuendoes and character portrayals.

Lee Power as Captain Corcoran proved once again that his considerable ability as both singer and actor in an all-round commanding performance.

Ruth Parr brought elegance, dignity and a superb soprano delivery as Josephine, the Captain's daughter who is unwittingly involved in a love tangle.

Simon Cakebread was perfect in the role of Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty, a demanding characterisation that carries much of the comedy mantle, sharing many of the famous and subtle patter songs. Notable of these is the delightful Never Mind the Why and Wherefore with Captain Corcoran and Josephine, which brought uncontrolled laughter, applause and appreciation from the audience.

Other fine characterisations came from Hammy Sparks as the gangling AB Dick Deadeye and tenor Richard Hales as AB Ralph Rackstraw, the latter as the pining lower deck suitor of Josephine.

Nora Price was convincing and effective as Little Buttercup and young Ben Starbuck performed well as Midshipman Tom Tucker.

The male chorus of sailors and the ladies as Sisters, Cousins and Aunts were superbly dressed in smart, colourful costumes, their singing was consistently on cue and words well enunciated.

Much credit goes to musical director Robin Wells for such careful preparation - it is his commitment to high standards that brings top quality GOS performances to these much-loved comic operas - and also to Pat O'Connell who directs the team on stage. Both are professionals with a passion that drives this well organised and motivated society from success to success. Bravo!
