An enterprising builder has united more than 30 local businesses into a one-stop-shop to "save community spirit".

David Mizon, 37, has brought together 37 businesses so they can split the £3,000 rent on a shop space in Reigate and help each other through the tough economic climate.

The "mutual-backscratching" store, called House of Building, is aimed at residents who want any building or decorating done in their homes.

Customers can visit the shop and will have access to the services of all the local businesses taking part, including an interior designer, a tile company, granite suppliers and fireplaces.

Mr Mizon said: "It's really important for local businesses to look out for each other because it's what keeps a community alive.

"People just go to supermarkets now instead of getting their fruit from the greengrocer or meat from the butcher. Customers and vendors don't talk to each other any more.

"This store is sort of like a supermarket – you can get all your building needs under one roof.

"But instead of all the money going to one big company, its going to local businesses, who, in turn, will spend their money in other local stores."

Mr Mizon, who works as a builder, came up with the idea after he inquired about rent prices in Church Street, Reigate.

He said: "I thought there's no way I can afford three grand a month – so I got all the people I do business with anyway to come in on it with me.

"I can't believe no-one's thought to do it before. Out of all the businesses I asked, only one said no."

The different businesses contribute different amounts towards the rent, depending on their turnover.

"There are also three big computers in the store with links to the different businesses' websites."

Mr Mizon said: "Networking is what businesses rely on – and all of us are benefiting from this store.

"It's like were all scratching each other's backs.

"What's also good is that none of us have any overheads because the cost is shared. "That means we don't have to charge as much money for our services, so the customer has more money to support other local stores.

"It's been a tough year for lots of people – but I think we can keep community spirit alive if we all look out for each other."

The store's grand opening will be held on February 27.
