Trucker drives at traffic warden

A traffic warden narrowly missed being mown down by an angry truck driver when he tried to issue a ticket.

The Mole Valley District Council civil enforcement officer was issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice to the pick-up truck parked in South Street, Dorking, at 12.30pm on August 19.

The driver intervened and ripped the ticket from his vehicle before driving on to the pavement towards the officer in front of shoppers.

The council said the truck had been parked on double yellow lines close to Junction Road.

The authority said the driver took the notice off the windscreen, banging the door and wing mirror against the warden in the process.

The vehicle then mounted the kerb, travelling a distance of approximately half a metre towards the officer.

The council said that although the warden was not hurt, he was badly shaken by the experience.

MVDC said attacks on traffic wardens will not be tolerated and have reported the issue to police.

A MVDC spokesman said: "The incident has been reported to the police who have CCTV evidence and independent witness statements.

"Mole Valley District Council has a zero-tolerance policy regarding aggression or violence towards its officers."

Police said they were questioning a 41-year-old man about the incident.

They said they were concerned about careless driving on the road where the traffic warden was struck.

Mole Valley sergeant Peter Gunning Stevenson said: "We have had problems with anti-social behaviour and driving around South Street."
