Warlingham collapse at Chessington

Surrey Championship

Division Three

Chessington 182

Warlingham 123

Warlingham's seemingly endless slide towards relegation shows no sign of slowing as the collapsed to a 59 run defeat at Chessington.

The change back to the 50 overs-a-side format had no effect on this match as neither side managed to last their full ration of overs.

Chessington won the toss, batted first on a pitch still a little damp after heavy morning dew and made a steady start despite an early wicket.

Ricky Patel bowled his 10 overs straight through and finished with an impressive 2-18 with five maidens.

And with Dan Chrystie also chipping in with two wickets Chessington were four down for 65 after 10 overs.

Both Chris Norton (34) and Daniel Yarnley (16) failed to build on good foundations and the middle order struggled against Mahesh Amin and Wes Lind who bowled 10 overs between them for only 13 runs before being rested to allow Warlingham's two young spinners, Nihal Patel and Devik Amin to try their hand.

The run-rate increased thanks to Chessington's skipper, Paul Willis, but he was caught at slip for a patient 37 in just over an hour. The inexperienced duo took wickets but at 140-8 after 41 overs, perhaps Warlingham should have re-introduced the more experienced bowlers.

Instead they continued with youth and a stand of 40 developed, mainly due to Nick Bailey who made 34 including three straight sixes.

Patel eventually took 3-58, including a caught-and-bowled from a very firmly hit shot; it was the return of Lind that ended the innings on 182.

When the visitors batted wickets fell regularly aided by some good catching, including a stunning effort by Bailey at extra-cover.

The run rate was slow but would have been worse if it weren't for the steady stream of wides.

Andy Robson took the early wickets, his 10 overs earning him 4-34 before he was replaced by Dan Yarnley whose eight-over spell cost only 26 runs for two wickets.

Only Wes Lind, batting at seven, looked comfortable. Aided by the continuing flow of extras, he kept the scoreboard ticking over, but no other batsman could build a partnership with him.

When he was finally run out from a direct hit for 27, the innings ended soon afterwards.

Warlingham had scored only 84 runs off the bat, their total boosted by 35 wides.

Warlingham's second XI were swept away by Guildford for the second time this season - as they were bowled out for just 69.

The Surrey Championship 2nd XI Division Two side only scored 69 despite Monish Patel's 26 and lost comfortably by seven wickets.

The third team faired better in the Surrey Championship Third XI Division Two.

Batting first, Warlingham made 243-8 before bowling Mitcham out for 212 on the last ball of the game.

Ray Lunt with 82 helped the home team reach the imposing total, and Shailesh Amin took 4-47 as the visitors just failed to hang on for a draw.
