POSITIVE Pedal Power is a programme that has been launched to help people who have suffered rape or sexual abuse.

Cathie Smith, who works for the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre, says the scheme organises regular cycling sessions to allow people to ride in groups around Mole Valley.

Ms Smith, from Fetcham, received £7,000 in lottery funding last month to buy four bikes and transport facilities.

She said: "The group is something I wanted to do since last year when I started to realise how much confidence it would give people.

"Those who have suffered these experiences have confidence issues and so this is a scheme to help these people and give them a good starting point.

"This is really about trying to provide a safe environment and trying to get people outside because people who have been abused often struggle with going outside.

"What we're really doing is aiming to empower them."

The Guildford-based charity receives 3,000 calls a year from people who have been sexually abused.

Ms Smith added: "I truly believe people do not realise this goes on as much as it does because it's a difficult subject to talk about for victims.

"There is often a lot of shame and guilt felt by the people who suffer it, because they think it must have been their fault when of course it isn't their fault at all.

"They often suffer in silence without people realising the trauma they experience.

"I really hope Positive Pedal Power will provide a comfortable, relaxing environment for people so they can gain back their confidence and their lives."

One victim who has already signed up to the scheme says she hopes more people will join.

She said: "The bike project has changed so much of my thinking. It is still a struggle sometimes but even if I feel dejected at the start I always feel exhilarated by the end.

"These rides are the focus I need and have helped me realise my potential not just as a cyclist but also as a woman."

The free cycling sessions, which are open to women only, take place at weekends and can be done in groups or one-on-one sessions.

“This is an excellent idea and I hope the charity goes from strength to strength.”
