First team stars hand Tanners win over Wanderers
DORKING Wanderers and Leatherhead kicked off their 2010-11 pre-season campaign at West Humble on Tuesday night.
And it was Mick Sullivan's Isthmian League Cup winners who came away with the spoils, though they were given a stern workout by Marc White's Sussex County League Division Three boys.
Sullivan fielded an almost full-strength side for the first 45 minutes of their opening outing of the new campaign, with Chris Boulter and Mark Simmons the only notable absentees.
New signing Chico Ramos played the full 90 minutes in between the sticks and trialist Bradley Graham played in midfield alongside fellow new signing Jason Pinnock.
White also fielded a strong-looking XI for the first half, but both managers made changes at the break to give trialists a chance.
The Tanners had the majority of the play in the first period, but early season rustiness was clear as passes and touches went astray at the last moment.
Elliott Thompson struck the post and Tommy Hutchings looped a header onto the roof of the net as both sides felt their way into the game.
Jon Coke extraordinarily had the best chance of the half, marauding forward from right-back and latching onto a Dan Dean ball over the top before flicking over Paul Williams in the Wanderers goal and headed into the side netting.
Hutchings struck a ferocious shot straight at the keeper before Wanderers had a nice spell of possession and pressure, showing their superior counterparts they could play a bit, and they almost took the lead when Jerome Beckles whipped in a cross that was met by Liam Hirrell and his volley looked to be looping in until Ramos got a hand to it and tipped it on to the bar.
Hirrell then tried again, this time from 30 yards, Ramos was equal to it once more.
Hutchings eventually did find the back of the net five minutes before the break, catching Wanderers on the counter and Hutchings moved from right to left and found the bottom corner.
Two almost new teams in two new kits emerged for the second half and there was little goalmouth action. For Leatherhead though trialists Jamal Carr, previously of Walton Casuals, and Liam Pestell caught the eye, while 17-year-old Andy Higgins looked a good prospect at left-back.
Kev Terry, who had been substituted at half-time, returned to the action two minutes from time for the injured Wes Harrison, and he sealed the result with a cheeky lob over the Williams.
Wanderers (First half): Williams, Milton, Freitas, S Duffell, Beard, Burgess, Hirrell, Beckles, Watson, C Duffell, Hamsher.
Leatherhead (First half): Ramos, Coke, Hendry, Dean, Goodwell, Thompson, Graham, Pinnock, Terry, Hutchings, Macleod.
