'I will never tire of fishing, it's more than just a pastime to me'

I OFTEN get asked, "don't you get bored with fishing all the time" and "all that travelling you do, is it not better to just fish locally".

Firstly, I never get bored with fishing and the day that I do will be the time when I hang up my rods, which I hope will never happen. I am not saying that I enjoy every match or session I do as sometimes weather conditions or bad draws make it an unsatisfactory day, but I do turn up week in week out looking forward to the day ahead.

As for travelling, it's part and parcel of being a match angler, so if the event is worth competing in or a league match is a few miles further than the norm then no problems, I will be there.

I guess you can say that angling to me is more than just a pastime or an excuse to waste a few hours of the day on the river bank or lake side, it's a passion!

With all the above said, I have learnt to take a small enforced break myself as in the past I have basically fished myself into the ground to the point that I have felt I have just gone through the motions, which is not good.

Around Christmas time I am ready to take a break and that will be no different this time round as most of the leagues close down until January and the calendar therefore takes a break for the festivities. This Sunday will be my last match of the year when I take in a Christmas match at Hartleylands Farm in Kent, although it will be a bit of fun, believe me everyone will be wanting to win this one and finish the season on a bit of a high, me included.

I will soon be in a position to start on my angling series, probably just after Christmas and in the spring where more daylight time will improve the filming plus fishing.

One of the first bit of filming I will be doing will be winter roach fishing on Milton Lake at Bury Hill.

The lake holds a huge stack of pound plus roach and considering there are a few around the two pound mark I can't wait to get stuck in and produce a few red fins for the cameras.

One of the main aspects of the series I am going to produce is to show other anglers how to catch fish as it happens, with no pre baiting, closed off lakes and all the other over the top stuff that goes on in some fishing shows.

Like most river anglers I have been a little frustrated with not being able to fish the rivers much of late.

Early in the season the rivers had no colour and hardly flowed which made them a waste of time of you like to use a stick float and trot the bait through a peg.

True to our weather climate the heavens opened up and flooded them out virtually overnight and with the last month being very wet they are basically unfishable unless you are one of the lucky ones to find a nice little slack bend on your local river which can produce some cracking sport as the fish shoal up for some cover and a rest out of the main currents.

However when the rivers stabilise again the sport should be spot on after the good flush through so keep an eye out for the levels to drop and get straight on the bank side.

Next week I will report on my last match of the season, the mince pies will be passed around for sure but the only bites I will be looking forward to is from fish.
